Wear 25: Hospitality student Tolu's journey to first qualification and confident presenter
Hospitality student Tolu has made remarkable progress with the Foundation of Light’s Study Programme so far, earning her a Wear 25 Award.
The Foundation of Light has long been a force for good in our communities and it's great that it is showcased in this way. Since opening earlier this year, the world-class Beacon of Light is already positively changing the lives of thousands of young people and adults while the Foundation is seen as the leading sports charity in the UK."We're looking forward to the evening and celebrating the Sunderland's success alongside some of Wearside's best businesses and organisations." Foundation of Light, established in 2001 by former Sunderland AFC Chairman Sir Bob Murray CBE, demonstrated how it provides opportunities to people through which they can improve their lives and the positive difference it has made to local communities. The charity's significant contribution to enhancing the skill levels of participants through employability and education programmes has also been recognised. Sunderland's newest sports, health, education and events venue will compete alongside Wearside's top hotels, restaurants, leisure centres and sports complexes for the 'Leisure Award' prize which focuses on services provided, innovation, proven track record, value for money and standards. In July 2018 the all-encompassing £20 million Beacon of Light opened, featuring six five-a-side pitches, rooftop football barn, two outdoor multi-use games areas and a 12-badminton court size indoor arena which is also capable of hosting large events and exhibitions. Other facilities include the newly opened Centre-Circle Kitchen café, classrooms, informal learning spaces and consultation rooms for improving health which are accessible to all.

June was another action-packed month for Foundation of Light, as we celebrated female sport and started preparations for the 2026/27 season.
The month formed part of the Together Through Sport campaign with the aim of inspiring more girls to get active and enjoy the benefits of sport.
