Changing Room Chat: Sebastian de Chaves shares story from professional rugby to sports psychology

The latest instalment of Foundation of Light’s Changing Room Chat features South African rugby player Sebastian de Chaves.

The series of talks gives players on the Foundation of Light’s football and education programmes the opportunity to hear directly from professionals working across different areas of the sports industry, gaining an insight into their experiences both on and off the pitch.

Johannesburg-born de Chaves moved to the North East in 2019 after signing for Newcastle Falcons (now Newcastle Red Bulls) from London Irish.

After spells with Wasps and in the USA, he returned to Newcastle in 2022, where he brought his playing career to an end, however this wasn't the end of his journey in sport.

During the latter stages of his rugby career, de Chaves studied sports psychology, having developed an interest in the subject throughout his time as a professional player.

As the first non-footballing guest to feature in the Changing Room Chat series, he shared his experiences of life in professional sport, exploring the psychology behind peak performance and the importance of preparing for life after playing.

His talk provided learners with a different perspective on the opportunities available within the sports industry, while highlighting how skills and interests developed during a playing career can open doors to new challenges beyond the pitch.
