Players join anti-racism workshop at Beacon
Pupils from across Sunderland and County Durham joined us at the Beacon of Light as we hosted a special Show Racism the Red Card event. The year 5 and 6 children took part in workshops that tackled racism; explored the ladder of prejudice, as well as discussing activism and hate crime, delivered by the SRtRC team. After a screening of video messages from England internationals Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Gareth Southgate, the youngsters were joined by Sunderland AFC Academy player Sonny Singh joined SAFC Ladies star Charlotte Potts for a question and answer session. Both players gave great insight to times they have experienced racism, despite their very different backgrounds and answered lots of questions from the pupils. Show Racism the Red Card are long-standing partners of the Foundation of Light, with these workshops taking place annually. This past summer the two organisations held a day of action at the Beacon of Light to celebrate South Asian Heritage Month, where there were lots of activities celebrating different cultures including a music and cooking showcase.
