Red, white and green - Foundation scoring sustainability goals

Red, white and green - Foundation scoring sustainability goals
Foundation of Light will once again support Green Football Weekend with a number of initiatives to help champion sustainability.

Both Sunderland AFC and their official charity are proud to be part of this year’s Great Save  campaign an initiative dedicated to reducing waste, upcycling football kit, and making the game more sustainable.

Running from 11 March to 2 April 2025, the campaign encourages donations of football strips, including boots, which will be repaired, reused, or upcycled and donated to those in need.

By participating in the Great Save campaign, football fans can make a real impact. Each donation scores a goal on the Green Football Weekend website, with the Club that collects the most goals winning the coveted trophy.

Donation points will be set up at the Beacon of Light with QR codes for easy goal scoring, ensuring every contribution counts toward the final score.

WHY IT MATTERS

Each year, 100,000 tonnes of sports kit end up in landfill—items that could be repurposed to support communities and extend the life cycle of sportswear. By donating, fans can help reduce waste, protect the environment, and give football gear a second life while preserving the game for future generations.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED
  • Donate your old football shirts and boots at designated donation points in the Beacon of Light
  • Scan the QR code at donation points to register your donation as a goal for Sunderland Football Club.
  • Foundation of Light will be running a football kit repair service when Sunderland AFC host Millwall (March 29, KO 3pm), allowing fans to extend the life of their cherished kit.
  • Encourage teammates, friends, and family to join the initiative and support sustainable football.
With the Great Save campaign the Foundation of Light is taking meaningful action to reduce football’s environmental footprint and make a difference in the community. Join us in scoring goals for sustainability!
