Wear 25: David recognised for dedication to Coals to Goals volunteering

A dedicated Coals to Goals volunteer who has returned to supporting the programme following a period of ill health has been recognised as the latest winner of a Foundation of Light Wear 25 Award.

Throughout its 25th anniversary year, the Foundation of Light has been recognising individuals who are making strides through its varied programmes, celebrating personal achievements, development and positive contributions to the community.

David Dixon has been volunteering with the Foundation of Light’s Coals to Goals sessions since the programme began four years ago, playing an important role in bringing Sunderland’s heritage to life.

Through his involvement, David has supported the delivery of group sessions and helped lead Heritage Walks, sharing his passion for Sunderland with enthusiasm while helping participants discover more about their city’s history.

Earlier this year, David was forced to take a step back from volunteering after experiencing a serious heart condition which required a period of recovery.

However, as soon as he began to feel better, returning to Coals to Goals was firmly on his mind.

Eager to get back involved, David rejoined the team, once again supporting the groups and picking up where he left off. Now making a full recovery, he has returned to leading the programme’s Heritage Walks.

His determination to return and continued commitment to the project reflect the important role volunteering plays in his life, as well as his passion for Coals to Goals.

David's dedication has seen him named a Wear 25 Award winner, recognising his contribution to the programme over the past four years and his enthusiasm for getting back involved.
