Historic Derby saw North East unite for purpose beyond football
While the Black Cats faced the Magpies for the first time in eight years in league competition, the official charities of the North East rivals united behind a greater cause.

It’s shaping up to be a fantastic fun family event and proceeds will help a lot of local people in need at a time when many are celebrating what they have. Jemma Dowson, Foundation of Light’s Event ManagerProceeds from the event will be shared between Foundation of Light and Red Sky Ball which is an annual charity event which raises funds for Children’s Heart Fund at the Freeman Hospital. Sharon Appleby, head of business operations at Sunderland BID, said: “This is a great addition to what is already turning into a packed programme of activities on offer over the festive period,” she said. “With the ice rink returning to Keel Square along with new addition Hadrian’s Tipi and all the seasonal offers at businesses all over the city, there’s lots to see and do in Sunderland this year." Andy Bradley, centre director at the Bridges, hopes to see a big turnout for the event. “The countdown to Christmas is an exciting time here at the Bridges and the Reindeer Dash is a fantastic way to get in the festive mood,” he said. “It’s a fun day out that the whole family can get involved in, with even Santa himself taking part. “Christmas is a great time to give back to the community, so we hope people will come down to the Bridges to take part and help to raise a lot of money for some very important and worthy causes.” Registration is 9-9.30am inside The Bridges Shopping Centre followed by a warm up with Santa and his reindeer before the race starts at 9.45am. The event is expected to finish by 11am. After medals have been handed out, runners are invited to stay for carol singing, character appearances and further fundraising activities. This event is run and delivered by Sunderland BID in partnership with The Bridges Shopping Centre and sponsored by the Rotary Club.
