Durham University and Foundation forge exciting partnership
Durham University and the Foundation of Light have announced a brand-new partnership to collaborate on transformative initiatives aimed at improving local communities.
A group of students from the Foundation of Light’s scholarship and study programmes were given a unique opportunity to visit Japan thanks to funding from the Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation.
The journey aimed to give the young learners an inspirational and immersive learning experience to help develop their future careers.
It was both a cultural and educational visit for the group. Accompanied by Foundation of Light tutors Neil Jones and Anthony Parkinson, they visited important Japanese landmarks and major company headquarters.
Anthony, an Employability Coach at Sunderland AFC’s official charity, said: “The efficiency of day-to-day life alongside the history and culture of the country is amazing.
“I think it was an eye-opening experience for the learners, and they all seemed to take a lot of inspiration from the trip.”
The group started the trip by taking in the views of Yokohama Landmark Tower and a visit to the Cup Noodle stadium. With football fans among the group, a stop at both the Nissan and Yokohama Stadiums was also a must.
A highlight of the trip was a behind-the-scenes tour of the Nissan Global Headquarters Gallery. Visiting the base of a company with strong ties to home, the group were given a chance to get hands-on with cutting-edge technology.
The learners were accompanied by the Deputy Manager of Nissan Motor Corporation, Ryota Ikumi, who was able to give the group unique insight and advice on careers in the motor industry.
Further cultural experiences included taking in the sights of Sankeien Garden and Kotoku-in to see The Great Buddha of Kamakura.
Before making the circa 5,700-mile trip back to the North East of England, the group took some final reflection time on Kamakura Beach.
Echoing Anthony’s observations, Foundation of Light Youth Skills Coordinator, Neil, said: “There is so much to take away, it’s going to take a while to digest.
“I hope it’s made a lasting impression on the guys too. Some of them are already thinking of returning to Japan for holidays and even to live and work out there.”
