Military Veterans represent Foundation and Sunderland AFC at national cup
A team from the Foundation of Light’s veteran programme represented Sunderland AFC at the inaugural EFL/Royal British Legion Football Cup earlier this year.
After two years without the International Cycle Challenge, the eagerly anticipated event is back, with Italy becoming the latest country to host the gruelling four-day ride.
Riders will set off from Pisa to Rome on 11 June before crossing the finishing line on 16 June – accumulating to a total of 274 miles with 20,500 feet of climbing.
The event raises money to help people in need across Wearside through Foundation of Light’s life-changing programmes. Every year the Sunderland AFC charity takes a group of riders overseas to complete the cycle challenge with 45 cyclists taking part in the latest instalment.
The International Cycle Challenge is sponsored by Grafton Group plc, with 20 of the 45 cyclists taking part representing Grafton’s senior team. Our partner Grafton, have supported the cycle challenge since 2011 and some of the routes that riders have encountered during this time have been nothing short of spectacular.
Previous routes have included Brussels to Paris, Dublin to Sunderland and Wroclaw to Prague.
Foundation of Light Event Manager, Fiona Murphy, is extremely excited about the upcoming event. “The upcoming International Cycle Challenge has been two years in the making but we are all extremely excited about heading to Italy.
“It has been a difficult time for the region amidst the Covid-19 pandemic, however, this event is a great way to raise money for people in need."
