Young people from across County Durham were given a special opportunity to meet Sir Bob Murray as part of a celebration event recognising participants of the Sir Bob Murray Award.
Delivered as part of Foundation of Light’s collaboration with Durham University, the event at Beamish Football Centre brought together pupils from East Stanley, Burnhope, Bloemfontein, Langley Park and Annfield Plain to celebrate their achievements and hear first-hand from one of Sunderland AFC’s most influential figures.
The day began with a look back at the activities and experiences young people have taken part in through the programme, before participants sat down with Sir Bob for a Q&A session. From questions about leadership and resilience to his proudest moments in football and charity, the session gave young people a unique insight into his journey and the values that have shaped his work.

Following the discussion, participants took part in a team competition, rounding off a day designed to recognise their commitment, build confidence and celebrate their progress through the award.
Sir Bob Murray said: “It’s always special to spend time with young people and hear their thoughts, their ambitions and their questions. Programmes like this are so important because they give young people the confidence to believe in themselves and the opportunities to learn, grow and succeed. Seeing the impact first-hand is what it’s all about.”
The Sir Bob Murray Award forms part of Sunderland AFC’s official charity’s growing partnership with Durham University, which is focused on creating meaningful opportunities for young people through education, sport and personal development.
Over the past year, the collaboration has engaged more than 800 young people across County Durham, delivering over 4,000 hours of activity across schools and community venues.

This has included a wide range of activity designed to reach different age groups and communities. From Friday Night Football sessions at North Durham Academy, to intergenerational sessions bringing together participants from Premier League Kicks and the Wear Together over-55s programme, the partnership is creating opportunities for connection, confidence-building and shared experiences.
In addition, in-school delivery has helped introduce younger children to the benefits of sport, teamwork and positive decision-making from an early age.
Professor Karen O’Brien, Vice-Chancellor of Durham University, added: “Together, Durham University and the Foundation of Light are transforming lives in North East England. The first year of our partnership has been tremendously successful, and we look forward to more to come in the years ahead.”
