Foundation of Light and the iconic Beacon of Light have been nominated for FOUR awards at the prestigious 2018 Sunderland Echo Portfolio Awards. Sunderland AFC's official charity is shortlisted for the Special Community Award, Social Enterprise Award and Best Training Provider, while the Beacon of Light is a finalist in the 'Leisure Award' category at the annual event, which celebrates the best in Wearside business. The nominations round off a successful few weeks which has seen the Beacon commended at the Structural Steel Design Awards, with the Foundation also in the running for the joint 'Uniquely North East' prize at the North East Charity Awards. Phil King, Assistant Commercial Director at Foundation of Light and Beacon of Light General Manager, said: "We are immensely proud to be nominated for the Sunderland Echo Portfolio Awards in recognition of our unparalleled work in the city and across the North East.
The Foundation of Light has long been a force for good in our communities and it's great that it is showcased in this way. Since opening earlier this year, the world-class Beacon of Light is already positively changing the lives of thousands of young people and adults while the Foundation is seen as the leading sports charity in the UK.
"We're looking forward to the evening and celebrating the Sunderland's success alongside some of Wearside's best businesses and organisations." Foundation of Light, established in 2001 by former Sunderland AFC Chairman Sir Bob Murray CBE, demonstrated how it provides opportunities to people through which they can improve their lives and the positive difference it has made to local communities. The charity's significant contribution to enhancing the skill levels of participants through employability and education programmes has also been recognised. Sunderland's newest sports, health, education and events venue will compete alongside Wearside's top hotels, restaurants, leisure centres and sports complexes for the 'Leisure Award' prize which focuses on services provided, innovation, proven track record, value for money and standards. In July 2018 the all-encompassing £20 million Beacon of Light opened, featuring six five-a-side pitches, rooftop football barn, two outdoor multi-use games areas and a 12-badminton court size indoor arena which is also capable of hosting large events and exhibitions. Other facilities include the newly opened Centre-Circle Kitchen café, classrooms, informal learning spaces and consultation rooms for improving health which are accessible to all.
The Sunderland Echo Portfolio Awards will take place on Thursday 1st November at the Stadium of Light.
