Youngsters from across Sunderland celebrated National Nursery Rhyme Week at an event held at the Beacon of Light.
Pupils from St.James RC Primary, St.Bede’s RC Primary School, Plains Farm Academy, Rosemary Lane Nursery School and Siblings Nursery, who work with Foundation of Light through the Premier League Primary Stars programme, took part in the event which featured various activities linking literacy and nursery rhymes.
The pupils also got a special treat when they got to meet Sunderland AFC mascot, Samson who helped the youngsters with some of their tasks.
Nursery rhymes play an important role in childhood development as well as being fun and assist with key skills such as language, communication, physical, social and emotional skills.
“We had a fantastic time with the youngsters today at the Beacon. There was a variety of activities taking place which all stretch and broaden the mind of the children through literacy. Special days like these are important for children as they have fun whilst learning.”
