As well as delivering GO TRI Local Sunderland Foundation of Light, the Foundation will also be taking Active Skills for Life into schools across the wider Sunderland area.

Active Skills for Life is a British Triathlon programme for schools that is built around the national curriculum for PE, giving teachers and deliverers the tools required to provide engaging sessions built around the core physical activity skills of swimming, cycling and running.

The Foundation will deliver these sessions into a number of schools in their network during the summer term, with members of their team being trained up by British Triathlon to deliver them. The Foundation will also host a schools triathlon from the Beacon of Light in May.

Former Olympic runner, Aly Dixon, who is now part of the Foundation of Light team, can’t wait for the event to get started: “‘Swim Bike Run’ is a great opportunity for families to get active and it’s a great warm-up to the World Triathlon Championship Series coming to town later this year.

“We want it to be a real community event that people look forward to getting involved with!”

Sam Morgan-Nicholson, Triathlon England Regional Manager for the North East and Cumbria, said: “I’m really pleased to be working with the Foundation of Light to bring this GO TRI Local to life.

“The programme is all about providing regular participation opportunities, with the Aquatic Centre being a great venue to base the activities from.”

Sam Allen, Event Director for 2023 World Triathlon Championship Series Sunderland, said: “Bringing the World Triathlon Championship Series and the best triathletes to the city is all about helping to grow participation in the sport.

“GO TRI Local Sunderland Foundation of Light will add to the existing network of clubs and events in the local area, providing opportunities for taking part in swimming, cycling and running in the run up to and after the event weekend in July.”

With GO TRI Local Sunderland Foundation of Light, club sessions and events taking place in towns and cities across England, Scotland and Wales, there are many ways to get involved with swim, bike, run in Sunderland and the rest of the country ahead of 2023 World Triathlon Championship Series Sunderland.
