On the 80th Anniversary of VE Day, Foundation of Light has reflected on the bravery of those who served this country during the Second World War.
Through our wide-ranging programmes, Sunderland AFC’s official charity has engaged people across many backgrounds in celebrating those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
Coals to Goals Heritage Walk
This week’s stroll for the walking group celebrating local heritage took them to Southwick Village Green to see the VE Day decorations. The group reflected at the war memorial and spotted the names of relatives killed in both World Wars.

Engagement in schools
Year Five pupils taking part in our ‘Power of Words’ programme at South Stanley Junior School learned about VE Day in a session which included creating their own bunting to celebrate the day.
Secondary school students taking part in the Premier League Inspires programme have also taken part in sessions to provide a better understanding of VE Day, and joined in celebrating the bravery of those who served by decorating bunting.

In the Kitchen
Study Programme students took part in a special cooking session in our Ministry of Food Kitchen, baking some wartime fruit scones while learning more about VE Day, World War Two, and how the ration affected households.

Beacon of Light reflects
Foundation of Light staff, pupils from our programmes, and customers with sports bookings all joined together to take part in an excellently observed two-minute silence at 12pm while reflecting on the bravery and sacrifice of those who served the country.
