Foundation of Light proudly hosted this year’s regional tournament for the Premier League Kicks Cup at Downhill Football Hub.
Young people taking part in Premier League Kicks sessions, which engage and inspire those at risk of anti-social behaviour, youth violence, or those from high-need areas to take part in football, activities, and personal development, competed for their football clubs and foundations for a place in the national competition.
Over 20 teams from across the North East, Yorkshire, and Lincolnshire competed in the mixed and girls’ tournaments at Downhill, including two host squads from the Foundation of Light.

Alongside the action on the pitch, Foundation of Light staff hosted workshops with the young people on Street First Aid and Healthy Relationships.
Players were also treated to a special visit from Sunderland AFC stars Wilson Isidor and Habib Diarra, who attended after training to watch the finals and present trophies to the winning teams.

Newcastle United came out on top in the mixed tournament with a North East Derby win over Middlesbrough in the final.
Doncaster Rovers took the crown in the girls’ tournament, beating Newcastle in the final after coming from behind to get past Sunderland on penalties in the semi-final.

Foundation of Light Premier League Kicks Coordinator, Craig Martin, said: “It was fantastic to welcome teams from across the region for a day of football and education.
“The tournament highlighted the incredible impact of the Premier League Kicks programme, bringing together young people from a wide range of backgrounds to enjoy the game, learn important lessons, and compete in great spirit.
“We would like to wish our winning teams, Newcastle United and Doncaster Rovers, the best of luck in the national competition.”
