Foundation of Light unveils ‘Brighter Tomorrow’ five-year strategy to supporters

Foundation of Light has unveiled its new five-year strategy, Brighter Tomorrow, inviting supporters, partners and communities across the region to play their part in shaping the next chapter of its work.

The strategy follows a year of reflection and ambition as the charity celebrates its 25th anniversary, and builds on momentum created by two recent events, a national launch at Westminster and a regional business breakfast at the Beacon of Light, which brought together leaders from football, government, business and the voluntary sector.

Now, the Foundation is opening the strategy to the wider public, setting out how it will continue to use the power of football and sport to create better opportunities and better lives across Sunderland, South Tyneside and County Durham.

Brighter Tomorrow outlines an ambitious plan to deepen impact over the next five years, centred around three priorities: Being Skilled, Being Connected and Being Well. Together, these pillars focus on improving access to education and employment, strengthening community connection and inclusion, and supporting physical and mental wellbeing for people of all ages.

The strategy also reinforces the Foundation’s commitment to partnership working, innovation and long-term change — ensuring that support reaches those who need it most and that no one is left behind as the region continues to grow.

Foundation of Light Chief Executive Lesley Spuhler said: “Our 25th anniversary gave us the opportunity to reflect on how far we’ve come, but Brighter Tomorrow is about where we’re going next. After sharing our plans nationally at Westminster and locally with partners at the Beacon of Light, we’re proud to now open this strategy to our supporters and communities.

The next five years are about working together to remove barriers, unlock potential and make sure everyone has the chance to thrive. Football gives us a powerful platform, but it’s people, our communities, supporters and partners, who make lasting change possible.”

As one of the UK’s longest-established football club charities, Foundation of Light has supported more than half a million people over the past 25 years, delivering programmes that improve skills, confidence, health and happiness.

The charity is now encouraging supporters, businesses and organisations to explore the new strategy and get involved, whether through partnerships, volunteering, fundraising or advocacy, as it embarks on its next phase of impact.
