Foundation steps up for young men across North East
Following recent comments from ex England manager Gareth Southgate about the lack of positive influences for young men, Foundation of Light is launching a bold new campaign to showcase the work it does every day to offer leadership, guidance and opportunity to the next generation.

The ’We Are Role Models’ campaign shines a light on the Foundation’s ongoing work across Sunderland, South Tyneside and County Durham, supporting boys and young men through sport, education and mentoring.

Southgate’s remarks around young men feeling isolated sparked a national conversation about the challenges facing young men today. But in the North East, that challenge has been clear for years and Sunderland AFC’s registered charity, has been meeting it head-on.

“We work with young boys every day who need structure, encouragement, and someone to believe in them,” said Lesley Spuhler, Foundation of Light Chief Executive.

“That could be a coach, a teacher, a role model - and that’s what our team offers.”

During Men’s Health Week (10–16 June) and ahead of Father’s Day, the Foundation are keen to highlight how football and community outreach can provide more than just recreation, it can shape character, build resilience and change lives.

Through targeted programmes, the Foundation supports thousands of young men every year with:
  • Mentoring through football and sport
  • Mental health workshops
  • Alternative education and life skills training
  • Employment and apprenticeship pathways
  • Positive male role models in schools and communities
The ‘We Are Role Models’ message isn’t just about Foundation staff – it’s a call to supporters, parents, coaches, and teammates to recognise the impact they can have.

“We’re not here to replace parents or teachers – we’re here to support them,” Lesley added.

“Every young person deserves someone in their corner. That’s what we do.”
