Over 100 local schoolchildren visited the Beacon of Light on Thursday to celebrate World Book Day.
For a second successive year, children from Dame Dorothy and Jarrow Cross primary schools embraced the event, with Easington Church of England Primary School also joining in the fun and games.
Students engaged in various related book-themed activities and were treated to a Samson hunt around the building, based on the book, ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’. Children also tried their hand at Harry Potter biscuit decorating before an educational visit from local author Anne Twine, which was followed by a Room on the Broom workshop led by the University of Sunderland.
Easington CofE were full of praise for Foundation staff following the success of another World Book Day event. “It was a fantastic experience for our children to celebrate World Book Day. The staff were extremely friendly and professional and they made the day even more special. It was a day the children will remember for a long time.”
Football in the Community Manager and Coordinator of the event, Danielle Chapman, said: “The day was a huge success and it was great to see children engaged in all of the activities and enjoying their day.
“We love hosting events such as World Book Day to raise aspirations within our local community as well as bringing our partner schools together.”
Five Primary Stars awards were also given out, with accolades presented to those who had tried their hardest throughout the day.
The event was part of the Foundation’s Premier League Primary Stars programme to promote literacy.
