SAFC duo inspire young players at International Women's Day Tournament

Players from SAFC Women visited a special tournament celebrating International Women’s Day as young female footballers from across the North East came together.

Jessica Brown and Louise Griffiths attended the event, meeting young players, presenting awards and sharing their experiences of playing in the women’s game.

Hosted by Newcastle United Foundation, the friendly tournament brought together teams representing Foundation of Light, Newcastle United Foundation and Middlesbrough FC Foundation.

The event highlighted the power of the Together Through Sport partnership, which sees leading North East sports foundations working together to create more opportunities for young people to take part in sport and physical activity.

During the visit, Brown and Griffiths spent time chatting with participants about their journeys into football and the importance of confidence, teamwork and believing in yourself both on and off the pitch.

The pair also gifted tickets for the upcoming Wear-Tyne derby between SAFC Women and Newcastle United Women, giving young players the chance to experience the excitement of a North East derby in the women’s game.

By celebrating International Women’s Day in this way, the tournament showcased how collaboration across the region can inspire the next generation of girls and ensure more young women feel they belong in sport.
