Azeem's Journey: From refugee to volunteer
Azeem Iftikah came to the Foundation of Light to help settle in the UK after arriving as a refugee, but he is now an integral part of the Wear Together sessions at The Venue in Stanley.
Women in Leadership are taking centre stage at the next Foundation of Light Business Breakfast, scheduled for Tuesday 15 October.
Hosted at the Beacon of Light, our Business Breakfasts allow like-minded local organisations to meet with the Foundation’s extensive partner network.
October’s event features an inspiring 'Women in Leadership' panel discussion, featuring trailblazing female leaders from across Sunderland.
• Lesley Spuhler OBE, DL - Chief Executive Officer, Foundation of Light
• Ellen Thinnesen OBE - Chief Executive, Education Partnership North East
• Susan Fulton - Executive Director of People, Culture and Engagement, Gentoo Group
• Natasha McDonough - Founder & CEO, MMC Research / Vice President, North East Chamber of Commerce
The event forms part of Sunderland Business Festival and is a great opportunity to connect, learn from leading women, and gain insights on leadership and empowering the next generation of leaders.
After the panel discussion, there will be an opportunity to visit our 4G football barn for a demonstration from the female Foundation of Light scholars followed by networking and refreshments.
Attendees are encouraged to bring a female colleague or leader from their business. Don’t miss this valuable chance to network and be inspired!

The former chairman of Sunderland AFC stopped by a volunteer meeting to say thank you to those who give their time to support the work of the club’s official charity.
A highlight among the Foundation’s delivery calendar, the summer programme of holiday courses features five weeks of varied activity to keep children active and engaged during the school holidays.
