Historic Derby saw North East unite for purpose beyond football
While the Black Cats faced the Magpies for the first time in eight years in league competition, the official charities of the North East rivals united behind a greater cause.
Sunderland AFC goalkeeper Anthony Patterson recently attended a Foundation of Light goalkeeper-only training session at the Academy of Light.
Young shot stoppers from the Foundation’s Player Development Centre and Emerging Talent Centre took part in a carousel of goalkeeping-focused training drills.
The budding ‘keepers were given a special surprise when the Black Cats’ number one showed up to offer his support.

Patterson watched on, offering encouragement and support, and answered questions using his experience and giving advice to the young goalkeepers.
The SAFC star stayed behind to sign autographs and pose for photos at the end of the training session.
“Funnily enough, one of the coaches here used to take me for a session just like this,” Patterson said on the visit.
“It’s nice to see so many young goalkeepers of all different ages. It’s great to see the interest in goalkeeping.”
