Black Cats Fans to undertake Marathon Challenge in support of Foundation

Two passionate Sunderland supporters are undertaking a marathon challenge in support of the Foundation of Light.

Alfie Evans and Joe Hay will set off from the Stadium of Light on Tuesday 25 February with the aim of running four marathons in four days to reach Hillsborough Stadium in time to watch the Black Cats take on Sheffield Wednesday.

“I’ve been too busy to properly think about how challenging it is going to be,” says a relaxed Joe on preparations for the challenge.

“I’ve no doubt after the first day it’s going to become apparent, but I’m really looking forward to it at the moment.

“We’ll see how I feel on day three or four.”

Alfie echoed Joe’s excitement for the task ahead, adding: It’s something that’s going to be really challenging, but I think once we get going, and the closer we get, it’s going to be really rewarding.

“We’ve seen all the great things the Foundation do for the people of Sunderland, everything they do for the city is everything that me and Joe really care about.

“So it was a bit of a no brainer when we were researching who to fundraise for.”

Foundation of Light’s commitment to providing accessible sport and play for children of all ages and abilities was among the main factors in the pair choosing Sunderland AFC’s official charity.

“Most of our core memories growing up are remembering being at school, playing football, being active, and making a lot of mates through that,” Joe added.

“It’s those kind of memories that made the cause so important to us.”

The fundraising initiative hopes to rally the community, in response to the ongoing challenges faced by many; it aims to unite the city and give a hand up to those in need, to help them live better lives.

We’ll be following their journey from Sunderland to Sheffield and look forward to celebrating with them at Hillsborough.

“I think I’ll need a coffee or a few energy drinks to prop me up,” Joe said on joining other Sunderland supporters in a packed away end after four back-to-back marathons.

“It’s going to be exhausting, but being in and amongst it, you get that boost of energy, the adrenaline is flowing, you’re watching the team and we’re still in that position where every point matters.”

Joe is anticipating a double over The Owls, predicting a 2-1 win to provide the cherry on the top of a mammoth week for the duo.

“I’m going to be more optimistic and match the 3-0 from last season,” Alfie added.
