Azeem's Journey: From refugee to volunteer
Azeem Iftikah came to the Foundation of Light to help settle in the UK after arriving as a refugee, but he is now an integral part of the Wear Together sessions at The Venue in Stanley.
Foundation of Light have a number of wellbeing programmes to support people with their fitness, no matter what age or ability.
Physical activity is extremely important to health and wellbeing and can help in the prevention, treatment and management of a range of health problems.
In partnership with Sunderland City Council and Public Health and Voluntary Organisations, the Foundation has introduced a Strength and Balance programme.
Aimed at helping improve balance, strength, stamina and flexibility, the 14-week long classes offer one hour of physical activity and 30 minutes discussion to those aged 55 and over.
The free sessions, hosted by qualified staff, take place at various venues across Sunderland, including the Beacon of Light and offer participants the opportunity to enjoying building their strength in a safe environment and the option to progress to other activities.
