Foundation backs Safer Gambling Week
Foundation of Light is proud to show its support to Safer Gambling Week 2020. Safer Gambling Week runs from 19th - 25th November and is a campaign led by the gambling industry that aims to create a conversation with customers, staff and the wider public about safer gambling, driving awareness of:
  • how to gamble more safely;
  • the tools that are available to help people gamble safely all year round;
  • sources of more advice and support.
The whole of the UK and Irish gambling industry – amusement arcades, bingo clubs, bookmakers, casinos and online – come together to support Safer Gambling Week. In January of this year, the NHS Northern Gambling Service opened a new base at the Beacon Of Light, to provide support to thousands of people across the north of England suffering with gambling addiction. They also provide treatment and support to people with additional and complex mental health conditions as well as those who may present with more risk – such as a risk of suicide. In Englandaround 265,000 adults (0.4% of the population) are classified as higher risk problem gamblers, with around 2.4million (3.6%) classified as being “at risk” from developing a serious gambling problem. However, fewer than three per cent of those affected currently receive treatment or support. The NHS Northern Gambling Service, run by Leeds and York Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (LYPFT), launched in September 2019. It was the first NHS gambling service of its kind to launch outside London.
