The Overtones to perform at Beacon

Chart-topping vocal harmony group – The Overtones – will headline the Foundation of Light Gala Awards Dinner this November.

Set to be held on Thursday 28th November at the Beacon of Light, the evening celebrates the achievements and inspiring stories of those who have taken part in the Foundation’s life-changing programmes while raising funds to ensure that work can continue.

Mental Health Awareness Week

Mental Health Awareness Week took place in May and the Foundation used the opportunity to spread important messages and highlight some of our programmes tackling poor mental health.

As part of the awareness week, SAFC stars took part in a Jenga Challenge to highlight the messages of not letting your problems build up without opening up and sharing them with those around you.

Holiday Courses a hit once again

It was another successful half-term of holiday course delivery at the end of May, with children throughout the region keeping active and learning skills during their time off school.

Foundation of Light has now launched the Summer 2024 programme for the six-week break, including a range of activity from football to engineering.

Learners take on Harrison Challenge

After weeks of working on their innovations, the Harrison Challenge got into full flow with Foundation of Light Study Programme learners delivering their final presentations.

For the challenge, students were tasked with pitching an idea to improve a piece of technology that they may use day-to-day.

The Foundation of Light group presented their initial ideas to a staff panel at the Beacon of Light, with the finalists then going to True Potential to deliver their presentation to some North East business leaders.

The perfect Father’s Day gift

With Father’s Day fast approaching, Foundation of Light have teamed up with A Love Supreme to give Sunderland AFC fans the chance to grab a signed copy of Sir Bob Murray’s acclaimed autobiography.

The first 100 people to make a purchase of I’d Do It All Again ahead of Father’s Day will receive a copy signed by the ex-Sunderland AFC chairman himself. 100% of proceeds from sales of the autobiography support the Foundation of Light.

We put the spotlight on our Wildcats programme, with messages from participants and coaches on how the sessions help develop a love of the game for girls aged 5-11.


Foundation of Light supported Expo Sunderland’s ‘Come Outside’ event with Skills Officer Dan Coyne delivery a cooking on a budget masterclass and Health and Wellbeing Manager Jade Gilbertson hosting a mental health workshop.

Sunderland AFC stars helped deliver messages on the importance of drinking enough water and avoiding water wastage by taking part in a Water Refill Challenge.

The Beacon of Light’s new café, Yard Nine, completed its second month of operation with all proceeds supporting the Foundation of Light.
