Sir Bob Murray will be inducted into the Sunderland AFC Hall of Fame at half-time when Sunderland AFC host Brighton & Hove Albion at the Stadium of Light.
The special presentation will take place during the club’s dedicated Foundation of Light Matchday, recognising both Murray’s extraordinary contribution to Sunderland AFC and his lasting impact on communities across the North East.
The longest-serving chairman in the club’s history, Murray led Sunderland between 1986 and 2006 after first joining the board in 1984. During that time, he oversaw one of the most transformative periods in the club’s history, guiding Sunderland through a new era both on and off the pitch.
A lifelong supporter of the Black Cats, Murray’s vision and leadership helped shape the club’s modern identity. Most notably, he played a pivotal role in delivering the Stadium of Light, transforming the former Wearmouth Colliery site into a world-class home for Sunderland AFC after the club outgrew its historic Roker Park ground.
Beyond the stadium itself, Murray also championed investment in the club’s long-term future through the creation of the Academy of Light and later the Beacon of Light – the home of the Foundation of Light’s work supporting thousands of people across Sunderland, South Tyneside and County Durham each year.
Founded in 2001, the Foundation of Light uses the power of football to inspire, educate and support people across the region, delivering programmes focused on education, employability, health and wellbeing.
Speaking ahead of the induction, Sir Bob Murray said: “Sunderland AFC has been part of my life for as long as I can remember, so to be recognised by the club in this way is deeply humbling. This football club means everything to the city and to the supporters who care so passionately about it.
“During my time as chairman, every decision we made, from building the Stadium of Light to developing the Academy of Light, was driven by a simple ambition: to help Sunderland reach its full potential and secure its future. We wanted to build something the community and its supporters could be proud of for generations.
“To receive this honour on a day that celebrates the work of the Foundation of Light makes it even more special. The difference it continues to make across the region fills me with immense pride.”
Supporters attending the match are encouraged to arrive early and visit the Beacon of Light Fan Zone, where a packed programme of family activities, sports sessions and fundraising opportunities will take place ahead of kick-off as part of the Foundation of Light Matchday celebrations.
The Hall of Fame induction will take place at half-time during the fixture, giving supporters inside the Stadium of Light the opportunity to show their appreciation for a figure whose leadership and vision helped shape the club’s modern era.

A new pop-up exhibition telling the stories of women fans of Sunderland AFC from the 1950s to the present day will be on display to visitors at the Beacon of Light from 11th March to 25th March.
Foundation of Light's holiday courses return for the Easter break, with a fortnight of fun planned to help youngsters spring into action.
