Sunderland AFC Players visit Beacon of Light to see Foundation’s impact first-hand

Granit Xhaka led a group of his Sunderland AFC teammates to surprise Beacon of Light visitors as part of a special ‘Seeing is Believing’ tour with the Foundation of Light.

Club captain Xhaka was joined by Noah Sadiki, Lutsharel Geertruida, Nilson Angulo and Melker Ellborg, with the visit designed to give the players an insight into the life-changing work delivered by the club’s official charity.

During the tour, the players joined sessions with young footballers from the Foundation’s Girls Academy and Holiday Courses, explored the Beacon’s ‘World of Work’ zones to learn more about its employability programmes, and spent time with members of the Over 55s Wear Together group, joining them for activities and games.

Speaking about the visit, Xhaka said: “It’s something where people are coming together, no matter the age.

“We are here as well to support them. It’s fun, the people are enjoying it, ourselves as well, and it’s just beautiful to see their smiles. I think it’s important just to be together, to enjoy the time together.”

The visit was filmed by Match of the Day to be included in their Sunday morning programme, showcasing the Foundation of Light’s work to a wider audience across the UK.

“Beacon of Light is a vibrant community centre for all ages,” said Foundation of Light CEO Lesley Spuhler, reflecting on what the tour showcased to the players.

“It’s an inspirational and aspirational space where people can get involved in sport, in health and wellbeing, with education, and with employability training.

“We really want it to feel safe, to feel inclusive, and I think we’ve achieved that.”
